Coral reefs inWestern Pacific, particularly in the Southeast Asia, are the most biologically diverse and productive reef systems in the world, but are also the most threatened, with unprecedented rates of coral reef destruction from anthropogenic pressures and climate change.

The first IOC/WESTPAC Workshop on the Coral Reef under Climate and Anthropogenic Perturbations will be held at the East China Normal University, Shanghai, China, in May 2009.
