Underwater Glider Transits Atlantic Ocean |
|
The more than 3000 profilers of Argo have revolutionized ocean observation systems. The next generation of unmanned observation systems are being dramatically demonstrated by the first ever cross-Atlantic voyage of an unmanned underwater robot. The "Scarlet Knight Glider", a decedent of Argo technology, is being guided on its six month mission by students of Rutgers University. By monitoring the daily progress of the glider and using data from Global Ocean Observation Systems for sea surface temperature, ocean currents and weather, the students are able to control the path of the glider by transmitting guidance commands via satellite communications.
