The Workshop entitled "GEOSS Support for Decision-Making in the Coastal Zone: Managing and Mitigating the Impacts of Human Activities and Natural Hazards in the Coastal Zone" will be the first of a series of regional Workshops addressing this issue. The Workshop will also mark the consolidation of the transition process of the IGOS Themes into GEO.

The main scope of the Workshop will be to focus on the specific needs, challenges and capabilities in the Mediterranean region with specific objectives being to: Compare scientifically sound scenarios for coastal inundation; coastal infrastructure; human health risks; ecosystems; and living resources. Further, current observing system capacities are to be assessed for providing the data and information required to assess changes in coastal zone susceptibility and increase awareness among coastal planners and managers.

The Workshop aims to enlist strong participation from the countries in northern Africa.

A detailed programme for the Workshop to be held in Athens, Greece, 9-13 June 2008, and related information can be found under http://www.greekgeo.noa.gr/geoworkshop1/index.html
