Call for Nominations: 2008 A. G. Huntsman Award

The Huntsman Award was established in 1980 to honour individuals of any nationality who have had and continue to have a major influence on the development of marine science. The award for 2008 will be in the field of Physical and Chemical Oceanography, which should be interpreted broadly to encompass patterns and processes at all scales ranging from micro- to global scales and from the near shore to the deep ocean. The deadline for receipt of nominations is March 15 2008.  Nominations may be submitted by mail, fax or e-mail (see below).  An electronic version of this call and the nomination form can be found on the Huntsman website at: www.HuntsmanAward.org.

Nominees must meet the basic criteria of outstanding scholarship and excellence of contributions to marine sciences.  Nominees should be actively involved in research programs and currently providing major leadership in their field.  They must have demonstrated a major influence on the development of marine scientific thought and should be anticipated to continue having influence in the years to come.  Thus, the A.G. HUNTSMAN AWARDS are targeted at marine scientists near the midpoint of their careers and whose reputation and outstanding contributions place them in the forefront of their field.  As a guideline, we are seeking nominees whose postdoctorate research career to date has been of order of 15-30 years.  The Awards are not intended to be for lifetime achievements.

The A.G. Huntsman Foundation recognizes the importance of interdisciplinary work in Marine Science.  Therefore nominations are encouraged where the nominee’s primary contribution is in the field of Physical and Chemical Oceanography and exceptional contributions have been made across two or more marine science disciplines or at the interface between oceans and other natural systems.

Please consider preparing a nomination for a colleague who you feel meets the criteria.  Upon completion the nomination form is expected to be of order of 2-5 pages.  If you do submit a nomination, please be sure to include a full curriculum vitae and publication list.  Supporting letters or abbreviated nominations from 1-3 colleagues are desirable and can be provided as part of the nomination or submitted separately.

Thank you in advance for your support in ensuring that all qualified candidates will be considered for this prestigious international oceanographic award.  I look forward to receiving your nomination(s).

Yours truly,
