Discover the new ENHANS project

enhans-banner.jpg The main goals of the ENHANS project are (i) to improve understanding of critical phenomena associated with extreme natural events and to analyse impacts of the natural hazards on sustainable development of society; (ii) to promote studies on prediction of extreme events reducing predictive uncertainty and on natural hazards mitigation; to bring the issues into the political and economical policies; (iii) to disseminate knowledge and data on natural hazards for the advancement of research and education in general and especially in developing countries; and (iv) to establish links and networks with the international organizations involved in research on extreme natural hazards and their societal implications setting up a consortium of experts of ICSU Unions and several major intergovernmental and multi-national organizations involved in the project.
GOOS is a partner to the ENHANS project.

2010 Meeting of Americas: call for abstracts

banner-meeting-americas.jpgThe Meeting of the Americas will be held in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, 8-13 August 2010. The Programme Committee will develop a union-wide science programme that will cover topics in all areas of geophysical sciences.
A session will be devoted to Regional Ocean Observing Systems in the Americas. You are kindly invited to submit abstracts by 31 March 2010 at: http://agu-ja10.abstractcentral.com/
GOOS intends to provide funds to 10 researchers from South America and the Carribean with decision on the basis of quality of abstracts submitted and accepted to the session. Anyone interested in having their abstract considered for GOOS funding should: (1) submit their abstract to AGU; and (2) send an e-mail to Keith Alverson, Director of the GOOS Project Office, with the title of the abstract and the name and institute of the presenting author.

July 2010 Perth IOGOOS-7 ... meetings

Meetings of the Indian Ocean Global Ocean Observing System and associated project groups will be held in Perth, Western Australia, 12-16 July 2010.

These meetings are by invitation only. Administration for delegate participation for all meetings is being coordinated through the Secretariats of the respective groups. Prospective delegates from IOGOOS, IOP, SIBER and IRF should refer queries in respect to attendance, administration and logistics to their own respective Secretariats.

theengineer-logo.jpgIn the last issue of The Engineer, an article entitled "Subsea systems proble the secrets of the deep" describes ocean observation systems of the world, including the contributions of GOOS to oceans and climate science. On the occasion of Oceanology International 2010, Ralph Rainer, Chair of GSSC, and Tom Gross, of the GOOS Project Office, were interviewed by the reporters for this article.
